Westphalian Street Theatre in a Dense City Centre Setting
The Sparkassen-StraßenFESTIVAL Werne is one of the most distinctive city festivals in the northern Lippe town of Werne. From August 28th to 30th, 2026 – Friday to Sunday – Werne Marketing GmbH will transform the historic Werner city center into an open stage for street artists. The format deliberately avoids classic folk festival (Volksfest) elements (like fairground rides) and instead focuses on one thing: captivating shows against a historic backdrop.
What Happens on the Streets
The program spectrum is typical of street theatre and of high quality:
- Fire Jugglers – performances with torches, fire lasso, pyrotechnic choreography. Particularly impressive at dusk
- Puppet Theatre – traditional and modern marionette/rod puppet performances, often with their own stage wagons
- Live Music – acoustic acts, street musicians, small bands; genres from jazz to folk to indie
- Acrobatics – floor acrobats, aerial artists, hand-to-hand performance
- Stilt Walkers – a characteristic landmark of many street theatre festivals
- Walking Acts – artists who move through the city center instead of having fixed stage locations
Historic Setting
The Werne city center is a small Westphalian beauty: half-timbered houses, brick buildings, the historic town hall, St. Christopher's Church, the market square. This backdrop sets the festival apart from comparable street theatre festivals. The artists perform in front of facades, in cobblestone alleys, on the market square – each performance gains a historical depth of field.
Werne Marketing GmbH
The organizer is Werne Marketing GmbH – the municipal city marketing company. Address: Markt 19, right in the middle of the festival zone. The main sponsor is Sparkasse Werne, which gives the festival its name. Contact for inquiries: Werne Info, Tel. 02389 71-209.
Werne — Town on the Lippe
Werne, with around 30,500 inhabitants, is located in the Kreis Unna district, on the northern edge of the Ruhr area, on the Lippe river. A historic Hanseatic town with a well-preserved medieval city center. The StraßenFESTIVAL fits into an active city event calendar, which also includes the Werner Sim-Jü-Markt (May), the Glasfenster-Sonntag (Glass Window Sunday), and several events on the Solebad (salt bath) grounds. Its location on the Lippe and its connection to the A1 motorway make Werne easily accessible from Münster, Hamm, and Dortmund.
