Northern Germany's largest Oktoberfest in the Vier- und Marschlande
The Spadenländer Oktoberfest is one of the Hanseatic city's most surprising festival formats. In Spadenland — a tiny district in Bergedorf, right in the middle of the Vier- und Marschlande — a huge festival tent, capable of rivaling any Bavarian Wiesn (Oktoberfest), is erected each year for around 5,000 people. It's truly Northern Germany's largest Oktoberfest, as the organizer rightly advertises.
The organizer is the Förderverein der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Spadenland (Support Association of the Spadenland Volunteer Fire Brigade). What began in 2005 as a fundraising campaign to finance the fire brigade has now become a three-day mass event attracting visitors from all over Northern Germany. The proceeds still go towards the equipment and club activities of the Spadenland volunteer fire brigade — a Volksfest (public festival) with a charitable purpose.
The program follows Bavarian convention, translated into the Hamburg marshland:
Classic Wiesn gastronomy with a Northern German twist: Maß-Bier (the original Wiesn glass with 1 liter), Hax'n, Hendl (roast chicken), Brezn, Weißwurst (white sausage). Alongside, some Hanseatic concessions: Bratwurst (fried sausage) and fish specialties. Outside the tent, a small amusement park with carousels, game stalls, and food stands.
The festival is now part of the identity of the Vier- und Marschlande. Travel from Hamburg city center takes about an hour — either by S-Bahn to Bergedorf and then by bus, or more directly by car. The rural atmosphere on the festival grounds at Hofschläger Deich is part of the charm: farmer's school meets Bavaria.
For groups of eight or more, a special offer is available for €25 per person — including admission, a liter of beer or soft drink, a hot meal, and a schnapps. A cost-effective option for a larger regulars' table or club outing.
The Wiesn at Hofschläger Deich will again follow the established three-day model in 2026: festival tent opening on Tuesday, September 29th, with keg tapping and live music; main festival day on Wednesday; family program and Frühschoppen on Thursday, October 1st.
As in previous years, bands like Die Lausbuba will provide the musical entertainment. The full program and daily schedules will be published in the summer of 2026 on spadenlaender-oktoberfest.de.
