Six days of music film, music documentaries, and live concerts in Prenzlauer Berg
Soundwatch understands music film differently from the major genres: the festival is not particularly interested in simple concert recordings or slick biopic narratives, but rather in documentary films that examine the social, political, and cultural contexts of music. Music as an expression of resistance, migration, identity, regional tradition, or generational conflict — this is the thematic framework of the programming.
Each edition features about fifteen music documentaries, supplemented by a series of short films, one or two audiovisual performances, and several live concerts. The films come from all over the world — from Eastern European brass bands and West African hip-hop scenes to portraits of British punk pioneers. Film screenings are usually introduced by filmmakers or protagonists. Admission is typically €9 per screening.
The main venue is the Lichtblick-Kino at Kastanienallee 77 in Prenzlauer Berg — with only 32 seats, arguably Berlin's smallest regular cinema, founded in 1996 and a cult spot for Berlin's independent cinephiles. A second venue is the silent green Kulturquartier in Wedding (Mitte district), a former crematorium complex that now functions as a film and performance venue. Both locations represent what Soundwatch is all about: curated programs beyond the logic of the big multiplexes.
The exact dates and program for 2026 will be published by the organizers at the end of September / beginning of October 2026 on the festival website. Soundwatch is part of the international Music Film Festival Network (MFFN) and changes its thematic focus each year — previous editions have explored themes such as music and resistance, diaspora, generations, and regional scenes.
