About Sonnenberghütte 2026

The Winzerausschank at the Sonnenberghütte is one of the most beautiful Palatinate summer traditions at the southern end of the German Wine Route. From May to the end of October, the Sonnenberghütte opens every Sunday and public holiday above the German Wine Gate in Schweigen-Rechtenbach. Winemakers, clubs, and restaurateurs from the village take turns hosting, each presenting their own wines, accompanied by Palatinate specialties and cakes. The location is spectacular: from the hut, the view sweeps over the southernmost Palatinate vineyard down into Alsace and up to the Vosges ridge. With its relaxed atmosphere, rotating concept, and spacious outdoor areas, the Sonnenberghütte is one of the most popular excursion destinations for hikers, cyclists, and wine lovers in the Bergzabern region.

The Sonnenberghütte at the Southern Palatinate Gate

The Sonnenberghütte is located directly above the German Wine Gate – the striking sandstone gate built in 1936 at the start of the German Wine Route. From here, the view extends over the southernmost Palatinate vineyard, the Schweigen Sonnenberg site, across to neighboring Alsace with the Wissembourg Valley and the Northern Vosges. The hut itself is a simple, rustic building with a spacious terrace and outdoor service.

Seasonal Operation with Rotating Hosts

From the beginning of May to the end of October, the hut is open on Sundays and public holidays. The special feature: the service rotates from one weekend to the next. Sometimes it's winemakers from the village, sometimes clubs, sometimes restaurateurs – each with their own wine selection, menu, and character. A schedule on the Schweigen-Rechtenbach municipality's website provides information about who is responsible each weekend.

Wine, Palatinate Specialties, and Cake

The hosts each set their own focus: Riesling, white and Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, Rosé, and Schoppenweine (local wine by the glass) from the Schweigen and Rechtenbach wineries. The menus feature classic Palatinate dishes – Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Wurstsalat (sausage salad), Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), Schinkenbrot (ham sandwich) – as well as homemade cakes and coffee specialties in the afternoon.

Hiking, Cycling, and Crossing Borders

The Sonnenberghütte is embedded in a dense network of marked hiking and cycling trails. Popular routes lead along the German Wine Gate, to the Madenburg, through the Schweigen Sonnenberg vineyard, or across the border to Wissembourg in Alsace. Many guests combine a visit to the hut with a hike or bike tour between the Palatinate Forest and the Vosges – a typical cross-border experience in the southern Bergzabern region.

Sonnenberghütte 2026 — edition 2026

The 2026 season at the Sonnenberghütte begins on May 1st and ends on October 25th. Every Sunday and public holiday during this period, rotating winemakers, clubs, and restaurateurs from Schweigen-Rechtenbach open the hut above the German Wine Gate and serve their wines. Palatinate specialties, cakes, and coffee complement the offerings, and the view over the southernmost Palatinate vineyard into Alsace makes the Sonnenberghütte one of the region's most beautiful hiking and excursion destinations. The exact list of hosts with individual opening hours is continuously updated on the Schweigen-Rechtenbach municipality's website.

The 2026 season starts with May 1st (Labour Day), the classic opening on the May holiday, and ends on October 25th, just before the end of daylight saving time. Within this period, around 20 to 25 different winemakers and clubs take turns hosting – a proven concept that makes the rotation the charm of the Sonnenberghütte.

Since the program consists of numerous individual openings, it is worth checking the host schedule at schweigen-rechtenbach.de/sonnenberghuette/ before your planned visit. This site lists the respective hosts, their wines, and special events (e.g., themed evenings, accompanying programs).
