15th Edition: Music festival on five stages around the Imperial Cathedral and the Berggarten — Gankino Circus, Sväng, Oxymoron, Chettin' 4, Izabella Effenberg
The Kaiserdom Königslutter (officially Stiftskirche St. Petri und Pauli) was founded from 1135 by Emperor Lothar III and is one of the most important works of Romanesque architecture in Northern Germany. With its central crossing tower, the Lion Portal, and the cloister, it is among the region's top attractions.
Right next to the Kaiserdom lies the Berggarten of the AWO Psychiatric Center Königslutter — a historic park with old trees, ponds, paths, and hidden clearings. The combination of the cathedral and the Berggarten creates a performance space that few festivals worldwide can offer.
The Sommernacht distributes five very different acts across five very different stages. Gankino Circus (Gartenbühne) delivers acoustic music between folk, Klezmer, and comedy with Franconian wit. Sväng (Kaiserdom) is an internationally acclaimed Finnish harmonica quartet with virtuoso programs. Oxymoron (Refektorium) is a German a cappella ensemble with finely woven vocal programs. Chettin' 4 (Hofbühne) brings Jazz Manouche in the spirit of Django Reinhardt. Izabella Effenberg (Teichbühne) is a vibraphonist and composer with a distinctive sound between jazz, classical, and improvisation.
Visitors wander between the stages, listen to each of the five worlds, and put together their evening individually. The routing and lighting design make the Berggarten and the cathedral surroundings a magical backdrop.
In 2026, the festival celebrates its 15th edition. Since 2011, the Sommernacht am Kaiserdom has established itself as a insider tip for music lovers from Braunschweig, Wolfsburg, Helmstedt, and the entire region. The organizers emphasize artistic quality and atmospheric coherence over mass appeal.
Tickets are available via Reservix at sommernacht.net. Regular ticket €35, reduced €15 (children 5–12 years). Travel by car via A2 (exit Königslutter) or train (Königslutter station).
The five acts alternate on the five stages; the audience wanders freely between the performance areas. The order and set lengths will be published on sommernacht.net before the festival.
The festival concept focuses on atmosphere and diversity rather than a linear stage program — the magical ambiance arises from the interplay of music, light, locations, and movement.
