Remscheid-Lennep – The Historic Old Town
Lennep is one of Remscheid's three major districts and the historic core of the city: founded as a town as early as the 13th century, with preserved medieval structures, remnants of town walls, half-timbered buildings on the Alter Markt and at the Wupperstraßen-Kreuz. Lennep's most famous son is Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the discoverer of X-rays, whose birth house stands here and who has his own Röntgen Museum in the old town.
The Summer Festival at Alter Markt
The Sommerfest Lennep has been held for over 15 years at the Alter Markt – the central square of the historic old town. The venue and atmosphere couldn't be more fitting: the half-timbered houses around the market form a natural backdrop for a district festival. A one-day event on a Sunday in mid-July, with live music, market stalls, gastronomic offerings, and a family area for children.
Sunday with Open Shops as a Companion
The summer festival coincides with a Sunday with open shops in Lennep: the shops in the historic old town are open from 1 PM to 6 PM. Visitors coming for the festival can simultaneously visit Lennep's boutiques, antique shops, bookstores, and specialty stores. The combination of a district festival and a shopping day makes it an important event for Lennep's retail sector.
Program Profile
Live music with local bands (acoustic acts, Bergisch cover bands, spring brass music). Market stalls with regional vendors (Bergisch farmers, beekeepers, cheese dairies, bakery specialists). Bergisch specialties from Lennep tradition: Bergisch waffles, dark bread, smoked pork. Family area with play activities for children and face painting.
Discover Lennep
Those visiting Lennep for the summer festival can easily fill the day with a visit to the Röntgen Museum, the Marktkirche (Market Church), the Alte Wallfahrtsstraße (Old Pilgrimage Route), and a stroll through the half-timbered alleys. For those staying longer: Schloss Burg is 15 minutes away, the Wuppertal-Müngsten Bridge area 20 minutes, and the Bergisches Land with its hiking trails is right on the doorstep.
