Neighborhood festival in the garden of the Gemeinschaftshaus Langwasser in Nürnberg
The Gemeinschaftshaus Langwasser in Nürnberg-Langwasser is the living room of the neighborhood – and the Sommerfest is its most important summer event. On a Saturday in July, the house opens its doors and, above all, its spacious garden on Glogauer Straße for a neighborhood festival with stage performances, hands-on activities, culinary offerings, and a program for families.
The Gemeinschaftshaus Langwasser opened in 1968 and is considered one of the first large community centers in Germany. It is located on Heinrich-Böll-Platz in the Langwasser housing estate – a district that emerged after World War II and is now one of Nürnberg's most populous with around 35,000 residents. The center is one of eleven cultural centers under the umbrella of KUF Kultur (Office for Culture and Leisure of the City of Nürnberg). The building also houses the Langwasser City Library, the ESSKULTUR restaurant, and the Geiza children's and youth center.
Langwasser, as a large housing estate in southern Nürnberg, is an example of German urban planning in the 1960s – with high-rise buildings, wide green spaces, and well-supplied infrastructure. Today, Langwasser is a diverse district: one-third of the residents have migration backgrounds, and many generations live close together. The Gemeinschaftshaus is a focal point of neighborhood culture, and the Sommerfest is its most open, accessible event of the year.
Within the city of Nürnberg, the Sommerfest Langwasser is one of about 40 neighborhood and summer festivals organized throughout the year by KUF Kultur, citizens' associations, or neighborhood initiatives. It is one of the festivals with a particularly broad family audience and a distinct intercultural character.
This year's edition continues the proven neighborhood festival concept of the house: a stage in the garden, hands-on stalls along the paths, children's activities in the green center, and culinary diversity from the neighborhood. The organizer is the Gemeinschaftshaus Langwasser under the umbrella of KUF Kultur Stadt Nürnberg.
The exact daily program will be published shortly before the festival date on the city's website and in the windows of the house. The house traditionally focuses on a mix of clubs and initiatives that are regularly active in the community center when selecting acts: the 1. Deutschen Boogie Woogie Club, the Big Band Langwasser, dance groups, and musical ensembles from neighborhood work.
