Gagern, Kluis, and Western Rügen

The municipality of Kluis is located in the west of the island of Rügen, in the West-Rügen administrative district, about halfway between Stralsund and Bergen auf Rügen. Gagern is one of the districts of the municipality — typical of the rural island side with wide fields, small forests, and a sports field that becomes the village center as soon as there's a celebration.

Like many village festivals in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Sommerfest Gagern is supported by community life: the support association of the Kluis Volunteer Fire Brigade, the active brigade, and the municipality share the setup, catering, and program. The festival has a clear character — not a major event, but a long weekend with acquaintances, neighbors, and guests from the surrounding areas.

Gagern Sports Field as a Stage

The festival grounds are set up anew each year on the Gagern sports field: a marquee, stage, barbecue station, and play area are erected. Opening hours range from 2:30 PM in the afternoon until well after midnight — fitting for a summer weekend on the rural island side.

Rügen Beyond the Beaches

Those who combine the Sommerfest with a holiday will experience a side of Rügen that is significantly quieter touristically than the chalk cliffs, Binz, or Sellin: inland areas, small farms, Bodden shores, and village communities. The festival in Gagern is a good anchor to experience this side.
