Sommerbühnen Aschaffenburg — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of Sommerbühnen Aschaffenburg spans four weeks – from August 14 to September 12. The cultural office of the city of Aschaffenburg collaborates with four program partners, each curating their own concert evenings: Colos-Saal for the indie and singer-songwriter segment, Heavy Grounds for heavy/metal, BUZZ for new music, and new from 2026 Sound Of Liberation – one of the most renowned European booking agencies for metal, punk, and hardcore.
Confirmed acts for the 2026 edition include RIAN, Thees Uhlmann (long-time singer of Tomte, now a solo artist), Dick Brave & The Backbeats, Maxïmo Park (UK indie veterans), and Sophia (intimate acoustic set as part of the Colos-Saal Open Air). Open-Air Summer on Campus
For decades, Aschaffenburg has been an important hub for live music in Lower Franconia – the Colos-Saal is legendary as a concert club. For several years, the city's cultural office has bundled the summer open-air program under the name 'Sommerbühnen Aschaffenburg'. In 2026, the festival runs from August 14 to September 12 on the campus of the Technical University – almost a month of open-air concerts.
Program Partners from the Region and Beyond
The concept is unusual: instead of a single booking agency, several program partners curate their own evenings. Colos-Saal, the Aschaffenburg concert club with decades of experience, handles the indie and singer-songwriter segment. Heavy Grounds takes care of the heavy and metal program. BUZZ specializes in new music. New from 2026: Sound Of Liberation – one of the most important European metal and punk booking agencies – with its own evenings.
'From Hamlet to Heavy Metal'
The slogan precisely describes the range: the Sommerbühnen is not a genre festival, but a series of co-curated concert evenings that attract completely different audiences depending on the day. Confirmed acts for 2026 include RIAN, Thees Uhlmann, Dick Brave & The Backbeats, Maxïmo Park, and Sophia (at Colos-Saal Open Air). Over the festival month, approximately 15–20 concert evenings with one or more bands each will be programmed.
Aschaffenburg – The Gateway to the Spessart
Aschaffenburg, with just under 70,000 inhabitants, is located in the far northwest of Bavaria on the Main river, on the border with Hesse, at the entrance to the Spessart. The city is not a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it is home to several important cultural institutions (Schloss Johannisburg, Pompejanum, Stiftsmuseum). The campus of the TH Aschaffenburg, located on Würzburger Straße, offers an open space with good stage infrastructure and has been the city's central open-air location for several years.
