Summer open-air concert by the music association in the historic courtyard of Birkenfeld Castle in the Birkenfeld district
The Sommer-Serenade of the Musikverein Birkenfeld has been a firmly established highlight in the event calendar of the Birkenfeld municipality for many years. On a balmy summer evening at the end of June, the historic courtyard of Birkenfeld Castle is transformed into an atmospheric open-air concert hall. The musicians of the association present a varied program of traditional brass music, film music, pop arrangements, and concert literature, appealing to a broad audience from the entire Hunsrück-Nahe region. The event is representative of the vibrant club culture in the Birkenfelder Land, where civic engagement and musical quality have gone hand in hand for generations.
With the Sommer-Serenade, the Musikverein Birkenfeld invites you once a year to a festive open-air concert in the inner courtyard of Birkenfeld Castle at Schlossallee 11. The backdrop of historic walls, old trees, and the wide view over the town's rooftops gives the concert a special atmosphere that attracts numerous guests from Birkenfeld, the municipality, and the entire district every year.
The repertoire of the Sommer-Serenade is deliberately broad. Classical works for symphonic wind orchestra alternate with concert marches, polkas, solos by individual sections, and arrangements of well-known film scores, musicals, and pop songs. The Musikverein Birkenfeld thus cultivates the classical standard of a concert wind orchestra without losing touch with the audience. Younger members of the youth orchestras also regularly appear with their own contributions, underscoring the association's intergenerational work.
The Musikverein Birkenfeld is one of the traditional ensembles in the Hunsrück and Naheland regions. In addition to the Sommer-Serenade, it participates in numerous church and secular events in the city, including annual concerts, performances at the city festival, and accompanying festive church services. The members, from young people to experienced musicians, rehearse year-round and thus contribute significantly to the cultural profile of the district capital Birkenfeld.
The Sommer-Serenade is aimed at music lovers of all ages. Families with children will find space in the open castle courtyard as well as lovers of concert brass music. The association itself provides for physical well-being with drinks and small snacks. In case of bad weather, a covered alternative location within the castle grounds will be used, so the concert will take place in any case.
The 2026 Sommer-Serenade by Musikverein Birkenfeld will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 7 to 10 PM in the inner courtyard of Birkenfeld Castle. The association invites you to a three-hour open-air concert featuring concert brass music, film music, and festive arrangements. The historic castle setting, the setting summer sun over the Hunsrück, and the diverse program combine to create one of the musical highlights of the Birkenfeld summer. Free admission, donations requested.
The 2026 edition continues the decades-long tradition of the Sommer-Serenade. Precisely at 7 PM, the orchestra will open the evening with a festive march. Over the course of the three-hour program, classical works, concert highlights, and entertaining arrangements will alternate. The musicians rehearse the program for many weeks, ensuring that each Sommer-Serenade has its own musical signature.
The date at the end of June is deliberately chosen: the long evenings allow the concert to begin at dusk and transition into a particularly atmospheric finale as darkness falls. For many residents of Birkenfeld, attending the Sommer-Serenade is a firm part of the start of the summer season in the district capital.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
If necessary, soloists from within the ensemble will perform shorter pieces. The youth orchestra will also be integrated into the program.
Free admission, donations for the association's work welcome.
