The largest Saarland choral festival – 100 choirs, 3,000 singers, one day in the heart of St. Wendel
Sing City is the grand showcase of the Saarland choral scene. The Saarland Choral Association invites over 100 choirs from across the state to the district town of St. Wendel once a year – traditionally on a Saturday in September. Approximately 3,000 singers fill several stages in the city center throughout the day.
The festival utilizes four main stages with distinct acoustics: the Schloßplatz as the central open-air stage (broadcast by SR 3), the Saalbau as the large concert hall (with SR 2 Kulturradio), the Protestant Town Church for sacred music and a cappella works, and several open-air stages in the pedestrian zone for smaller choirs and chamber ensembles.
The diversity of the program is one of Sing City's most important features: men's choirs, mixed choirs, women's choirs, children's and youth choirs, gospel ensembles, a cappella groups, pop choirs, and folk song choirs perform together. Each choir decides its own repertoire – "You decide what you sing, as always.".
The festival traditionally concludes with a concert by a professional a cappella band on the main stage at Schloßplatz (in previous years, for example, "Anders"). Starting around 6:15 PM, ending at 7:30 PM – the final performance once again brings together thousands of listeners and provides a fitting end to the day.
St. Wendel is the district town of the St. Wendel district and, with around 26,000 inhabitants, the second-largest town in the north of Saarland. The historic old town with the Gothic Wendelinus Basilica, the Schloßplatz, and the baroque town wall is a Saarland cultural heritage site. Sing City combines this architectural backdrop with the rich choral life of Saarland – a rare and impactful symbiosis.
The organizer is the Saarland Choral Association. Choir registrations are possible until January 31, 2026 – contact Frank Vendulet, [email protected]. The detailed program will be published in late summer 2026 on the association's website.
Free admission to all stages and concerts. Food and drinks available at the stands of the St. Wendel city center associations.
