Concert with sea shanties and traditional sea songs in the summery Rose Garden Zweibrücken
The Rhineland-Palatinate may be far from the sea, but in Zweibrücken, the Shanty Choir of the Marinekameradschaft Teddy Suhren has been keeping the vibrant tradition of sea songs alive for decades. On Sunday, July 19, 2026, at 4 PM, the choir invites you to its traditional summer concert in the Rosengarten. Against the backdrop of blooming rose beds, multi-part shanties, sea songs, and maritime folk songs will be sung, transporting the audience into the world of deep-sea sailing.
Shanties are the rhythmic work songs that were once sung on sailing ships to keep crews synchronized when hoisting anchors, setting sails, and turning capstans. Over the centuries, an extensive repertoire of English, American, German, Dutch, and Scandinavian songs developed, which is now maintained by shanty choirs around the world. The Zweibrücken choir presents a selection from this rich heritage, including classics like 'What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor', 'La Paloma', 'Aloha Oe', and many more.
The Marinekameradschaft Teddy Suhren Zweibrücken is an association of former and active naval personnel as well as maritime friends from the region. It preserves the tradition of the German Navy, organizes memorial events, and is involved in youth work. The associated Shanty Choir rehearses regularly and performs several times a year in the region and beyond. The summer concert in the Rosengarten is one of the choir's regular highlights and attracts an appreciative audience every year.
With its spacious lawns, shady areas, and blooming flowerbeds, the Rosengarten offers an unusual but particularly atmospheric setting for a shanty concert. Visitors can sit on blankets or bring their own chairs, listen to the choir, and enjoy the splendor of the garden at the same time. Admission to the concert is free; a donation to support the choir's work is welcome.
The concert will last approximately 90 minutes and includes classic sea songs, German and international shanties, as well as maritime folk songs from the choir's traditional repertoire. Between songs, the stories and backgrounds of the pieces will be explained, allowing even listeners without prior maritime knowledge to gain deep insight into the world of seafaring music.
The exact setlist for 2026 will be determined by the choir and usually announced shortly before the concert. The structure follows the proven framework of previous years.
