9th Harsefeld Soapbox Derby on Herrenstraße — Family festival with self-built race cars
Soapbox cars have a long tradition. Originally from American suburban life, these constructions were simple wooden carts, often assembled from old soapboxes — hence the name. Today, soapbox cars are creatively designed, from simple board constructions to artfully designed race car imitations. Building a soapbox car is a classic father-child or family project that combines craftsmanship, creativity, and patience.
The Harsefeld Soapbox Derby has been held regularly for several years — 2026 marks the 9th edition. The municipality of Harsefeld hosts the event and uses Herrenstraße as the race track. The route through the town makes the race a public event that involves residents and businesses.
Herrenstraße in Harsefeld is the main shopping street of the town. For the race day, it becomes the race track. The slightly sloping course allows the soapbox cars to gain speed through gravity — the classic principle of the unmotorized vehicle. A finish line, grandstands or at least standing areas along the track, and a starting structure are part of the race infrastructure.
Participants compete in different age groups to create comparable conditions. Younger children often race with preparation and support from older family members, while older teenagers often build their own cars. The classes are determined by the organizer, and the daily schedule is organized accordingly.
Beyond the actual race, race day is a family festival. Food stalls, drinks, a children's program, and the convivial gathering of participants and spectators make the Sunday an experience far beyond the racing sequences. Parents chat about construction methods, children cheer on, and residents watch from the sidewalk.
Spectators have free access. Registration to participate must be done in advance through the organizer — details and registration procedures will be published by the municipality of Harsefeld in spring 2026.
The Soapbox Derby has become established in Harsefeld and is a fixed part of the municipality's event calendar.
The track layout, class divisions, and registration details will be published by the municipality of Harsefeld.
