Wine in Southern Frankfurt
Schwanheim is one of the most charming and oldest districts of Frankfurt am Main — nestled between the city forest, the Main riverbank, and the industrial areas of Hoechst AG. The village has retained its suburban character: narrow alleys, half-timbered houses, the Schwanheim riverbank with the dune ("Schwanheimer Düne") as a nature reserve. In the middle lies the Kobelthof, a historic estate that also houses the Schwanheim Local History Museum.
The Schwanheimer Weinverein
The festival is organized by the Schwanheimer Weinverein — a traditional winegrowing citizens' initiative that has been organizing the Schwanheim Wine Festival at the Kobelthof for years. It is not a loud big-city festival, but a typical Frankfurt district wine festival: regional and supra-regional vintners, cozy tables in the courtyard, knowing and being known.
Local History Museum Open
A nice combination: During the wine festival, the Schwanheim Local History Museum opens its doors from 2 PM to 6 PM. Those who fancy a quiet hour can explore the district's history between two glasses of wine — from Schwanheim's early days through its incorporation into Frankfurt in 1928 to industrialization. Normally, the museum is open on Sundays from 2 PM to 4 PM.
Schwanheim as an Excursion Destination
Those arriving from Frankfurt's city center can combine the wine festival with an excursion to the Schwanheimer Düne (inland dune, nature reserve) or a walk along the Main riverbank. Those arriving by bike can cycle along the entire southern Main riverbank — a relaxed Frankfurt tour that doesn't go through the city center.
