From Village to City – Frankfurt's Niederrad District Celebrates 125 Years of Incorporation
On April 1, 1901, Niederrad, previously an independent village on the Main riverbank, was incorporated into the city of Frankfurt am Main. 125 years later, the district is celebrating its incorporation anniversary with a three-day community festival. From August 22nd to 24th, 2026, the schoolyard of KGS Schwanheimer Straße will transform into the central festival grounds, with activities spread throughout the district.
The festival motto 'From Village to City' reflects Niederrad's historical development: from an agricultural village on the Main riverbank to an urban residential and office city, featuring the distinctive 'Bürostadt Niederrad' (Niederrad Business District) and the Frankfurt trotting track area. Historical exhibitions showcase the journey from a farming village to a modern Frankfurt residential environment.
One of the highlights for families is the 'Blue Light Mile': Children can experience firefighters, paramedics, and police officers up close, inspect emergency vehicles, and watch demonstrations. The focus is on getting to know Frankfurt's emergency services.
The sporting highlight is the 'Niederrad Challenge', a cycling event with team spirit – a tribute to the former trotting track tradition of Niederrad and Frankfurt's cycling culture. Live music on stage, dance performances, interactive stations for all ages, and food and drinks with sweet and savory specialties complete the program.
The organizers of the festival days are the Heimat- und Sportverein 1875 Niederrad (HSF) (Local and Sports Club 1875 Niederrad), one of the oldest clubs in the district, along with numerous Niederrad clubs and institutions. The motto: 'Cohesion, Diversity, and Commitment'.
Today, Niederrad is divided into the 'old' town center with half-timbered houses and Main riverbank forests, the 'Bürostadt Niederrad' with its distinctive skyscrapers, and the area around the trotting track. With around 20,000 inhabitants, Niederrad is a vibrant Frankfurt district. The 2026 anniversary festival aims to involve all three sub-areas and showcase the diversity of the district's identity – from the old farming village to the modern Frankfurt residential environment.
Three days of festival program on the KGS Schwanheimer Straße schoolyard, supplemented by program points throughout the district. The organizers are the Heimat- und Sportverein 1875 Niederrad with Niederrad clubs, institutions, and initiatives.
