Grand Anniversary Celebration: 140 Years of Shoe Industry – 3 Days, 3 Stages, 25+ Hours of Live Music and Bulldog Parade in the Palatinate's Shoe Metropolis
The Schuhmachermarkt Hauenstein is the largest city festival in the climatic health resort in Wasgau and in 2026, it will have a special focus: 140 years of shoe industry in Hauenstein. From May 29 to 31, 2026, the town center will transform into a three-day festival mile with three stages, over 25 hours of live music, and a traditional Bulldog parade on Sunday.
Hauenstein is considered the cradle of the Palatinate shoe industry. Shoemaking has been done here since the 1880s, and although most of the production has long since moved abroad, shoe culture continues to shape the town to this day. The German Shoe Museum, the Shoe Mile Outlet, and the annual Shoemaker Market festival keep this identity alive.
The 2026 edition is themed "140 Years of Shoe Industry in Hauenstein." What began in 1886 with the founding of the first mechanized shoe factory in the village shaped the economic life of the Wasgau village for over a century. At its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, several thousand Hauenstein residents worked in the shoe factories. Today, the German Shoe Museum and the annual Shoemaker Market commemorate this history.
The 2026 Shoemaker Market spans three days and features three stages in Hauenstein's town center. Over 25 hours of live music in various styles are announced – from Palatinate dialect pop and cover bands to rock and jazz, and DJ sets late into the evening. The festival mile stretches between Pfälzer Hof and Lorenz-Wingerter-Platz through the town center.
The event kicks off on Friday evening, May 29, 2026, with the Long Night of the Museum. The German Shoe Museum will be open late into the evening, showcasing special exhibitions on the 140-year history of the Hauenstein shoe industry. Guided tours, demonstrations of traditional craft techniques, and an accompanying stage program will mark the opening evening.
Saturday and Sunday will be dominated by the main festival activities. The festival mile between Pfälzer Hof and Lorenz-Wingerter-Platz will feature stalls, food vendors, beer stands, and stages. Palatinate and national artists will perform simultaneously on the three stages, along with activities for families, shoe sales in the outlets, and a market offering arts and crafts and regional products. On Sunday, the traditional Bulldog parade will also roll through the town – historic tractors from the region in formation.
