Traditional marksmen's festival of the Zellerfeld Marksmen's Society of 1539 e.V. from June 5th to 7th, 2026 — three festival days of one of Germany's oldest marksmen's societies in the Upper Harz
Zellerfeld is now a district of the mining town Clausthal-Zellerfeld, one of the historic Upper Harz mining towns. For several centuries, the Upper Harz was one of Europe's most important mining areas, and the prosperity generated from ore extraction shaped the social structure of the region. The marksmen's societies were an important part of this society — they organized civil defense, festival culture, and representative duties.
The Zellerfeld Marksmen's Society was founded in 1539 — just a few decades after large-scale mining began in the Upper Harz. With nearly 500 years of society history, it is among the oldest documented marksmen's associations in Germany. Over the centuries, the society has contributed to the historical development of the Upper Harz, from the heyday of mining through economic changes to its current role as a tourism and university town.
The 2026 marksmen's festival spans three days. The dates are confirmed as June 5th–7th by the calendar of the Clausthal Marksmen's Society. June is the traditional date for Upper Harz marksmen's festivals, and the individual societies (Zellerfeld, Clausthal, Lautenthal, Sankt Andreasberg) schedule their festival dates throughout the summer months to host visiting friendly societies.
The Zellerfeld Marksmen's Society is part of the Upper Harz Marksmen's Association — an umbrella organization for Upper Harz marksmen's societies. This regional network fosters a special festival culture, where the individual society festivals also serve as meeting points for the entire Upper Harz marksmen's community.
The program follows the classic structure of a North German marksmen's festival: a festive opening evening on Friday, king's shooting, marksmen's mass, festival parade, and dance evening on Saturday, and a morning pint, family program, and proclamation of the new marksmen's king on Sunday. The participation of friendly societies, music bands, and marching bands adds a special splendor to the festival parade.
The nearly 500-year history of the society is one of the most important distinguishing features of the Zellerfeld Marksmen's Society. With the 2026 edition, the society continues this exceptional tradition.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
