About Ludwigshafen Cultural Summer

The Ludwigshafen Cultural Summer is the central umbrella event of the municipal Cultural Office and one of the most extensive cultural summer series in the Vorderpfalz region. For six months, from May to October, it bundles concerts, readings, open-air events, neighborhood festivals, theater and performance projects, as well as numerous contributions from cultural associations, citizens' initiatives, and independent groups. In 2026, the 36th edition is entirely dedicated to the motto "The Golden Twenties", which is also proclaimed by the entire Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer. The thematic and spatial focus is on Hemshof and the city center – districts that, like few others, embodied the cultural spirit of the 1920s in Ludwigshafen.

A Six-Month Platform for Ludwigshafen's Cultural Scene

The Ludwigshafen Cultural Summer is not a classic festival with a fixed venue, but an umbrella brand: it brings together the city's cultural productions, programs from cultural associations and initiatives, and contributions from the districts under a common logo. This makes the Cultural Summer one of the most important showcases for the broad and diverse cultural scene of the second-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. Concerts ranging from classical, jazz, pop, and world music meet theater productions, readings, dance performances, art exhibitions, workshops, and open-air events in parks, squares, and districts.

Motto 2026: The Golden Twenties

The motto "The Golden Twenties" is set by the statewide Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer and is filled in Ludwigshafen with a very specific historical reference. In the 1920s, the young industrial city – then characterized by BASF, port activities, and a growing labor movement – experienced a cultural boom. Dance halls, cinemas, variety shows, workers' choirs, and theater stages were particularly prominent in the city center and Hemshof. It is precisely these two districts that will be the focus of the 2026 program. Concerts with repertoire from the interwar period, readings, city walks tracing the 1920s, dance evenings, performances, and participatory projects with the city community are planned.

Hemshof as the Cultural Heart

Hemshof is Ludwigshafen's most culturally diverse district and a meeting point for residents from over 100 nations. With facilities such as the Kulturzentrum dasHaus, the Multi-Kulti-Markt, and a vibrant landscape of associations, it is predestined to ground the "Golden Twenties" motto with a contemporary relevance. Concerts in courtyards, performances in squares, and projects in cultural centers form a recognizable program focus here.

The Diversity of Venues

In addition to Hemshof and the city center, events are planned in many other districts over the six months: Ebertpark with its Orangery and concert shell, Parkinsel with the Inselsommer festival, Pfalzbau Bühnen, Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Schillerhaus Oggersheim, BASF Feierabendhaus, and many community centers. The Cultural Summer is thus also a portrait of the city: anyone who explores the entire program in the summer of 2026 will discover Ludwigshafen in its full cultural breadth.

Ludwigshafen Cultural Summer — edition 2026

The 36th edition of the Ludwigshafen Cultural Summer runs from May 1 to October 31, 2026, under the statewide motto "The Golden Twenties". For six months, hundreds of individual events will be bundled under this common umbrella: concerts, readings, open-air performances, neighborhood festivals, dance, theater, performances, and participatory projects. The thematic and spatial focus in 2026 is on Hemshof and the city center – precisely where Ludwigshafen experienced its own cultural flourishing in the 1920s.

The detailed program for the 2026 season will be continuously updated by the Cultural Office. Important sub-festivals and program partners include Inselsommer on Parkinsel (June 13–21), Orangerie-Kultur in Ebertpark (May to October), the Bruchfeste in Maudach, Pfalzbau Bühnen, dasHaus, BASF Feierabendhaus, and the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, and Schillerhaus Oggersheim.
