Traditional Schützenfest in the Sauerland with Hildfeld Serenade, King's Shoot, and Schützenball
If you're looking for a winter sports center in Germany that isn't in the Alps, you'll come to Winterberg — North Rhine-Westphalia's most important winter sports town, located in the Hochsauerlandkreis near the Kahlen Asten. Winterberg is a winter sports mecca in winter (bobsleigh track, ski slopes, cross-country trails), and a summer tourist destination offering hiking, mountain biking, and wellness. With just under 13,000 inhabitants, the town is small, but its tourist volume makes it a central hub in the Sauerland. The annual Schützenfest of the Schützengesellschaft 1825 is the most important local festival tradition beyond tourism.
The Schützengesellschaft 1825 e.V. Winterberg is one of the town's oldest associations. Its founding in 1825 marks the bourgeois marksmen's tradition of the early 19th century. With over 200 years of club history, the Winterberg Schützengesellschaft is among the most traditional associations in the Hochsauerlandkreis. In 2025, it celebrated its 200th anniversary with a special program — in 2026, the Schützenfest returns to its regular format.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Friday, June 19th to Sunday, June 21st, 2026. Three days of festivities with classic Sauerland marksmen's choreography:
Friday opens the festival weekend at 6:00 PM with a Serenade by the Hildfeld Music Association at St. Franziskus Hospital Winterberg. This serenade in front of the hospital is a beautiful Sauerland tradition: the music association plays for patients and seniors, bringing some cheer to the medical facility with brass music and thus opening the festival weekend with a social act. Afterwards, a march to the festival tent.
Saturday is the main festival day with dense choreography:
The Schützenball is musically accompanied by two ensembles:
This musical double act is characteristic of the Winterberg Schützen tradition — it connects the older brass music generation with more modern big band sound.
Sunday offers the conclusion of the festival with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), King's banquet (Königsmahl), and a joint festival tent finale.
The Kurparkstuben are the traditional pub of the Winterberg Schützen's King's Company. The company meets here regularly throughout the year, and it's where the muster for the King's Proclamation begins on festival Saturday. The connection between the festival venue and the spa park underscores the festival's anchoring in the town's tourism landscape: Winterberg thrives on tourism, the spa park is a central tourist attraction — and the marksmen are at home in the spa park.
The choice of St. Franziskus Hospital as the serenade location on Friday is deliberately socially connotated. With the musical greeting in front of the hospital, the Schützengesellschaft demonstrates social responsibility — the clinic residents are included in the festival weekend, for whom direct participation is often denied. A beautiful gesture that elevates the Schützenfest beyond a mere club festival.
The 2026 edition brings the Winterberg Schützenfest back to its regular form after the 200th-anniversary year in 2025. Three days of festivities with the Hildfeld Serenade on Friday (social kickoff at the hospital), the King's Shoot on Saturday with a dual competition structure (Junior Schützen and Main King), and the Schützenball with a double musical lineup. A classic Sauerland Schützenfest format with traditional choreography and established customs.
