Whitsun weekend in the Werlte district of Wieste — tradition, king's shooting, and conviviality in the heart of the Hümmling
The town of Werlte consists of several districts, each of which has developed its own club and festival culture. Wieste is one of these districts and is home to an active marksmen's association that hosts its main festival annually on the Whitsun weekend. The marksmen's culture of the Hümmling differs in nuances from that of the Emsland and Münsterland marksmen's traditions and is closely linked to the region's Catholic tradition.
The Whitsun weekend is traditionally an important festival date in the Catholic Emsland. In 2026, the Wieste marksmen's association will celebrate its festival on Whit Saturday, May 30th, and Whit Sunday, May 31st. The extended weekend offers the ideal opportunity for an extensive festival with all the classic program elements — from the solemn assembly of the marksmen and the parade to the king's shooting.
As is customary at Emsland marksmen's festivals, Saturday evening is dedicated to the grand marksmen's ball. A dance band plays in the festival tent until late at night, food and drinks are served at usual club prices, and the village community comes together for a lively festival evening. Sunday is entirely dedicated to the king's shooting: the new king is determined from among the marksmen, chooses his queen, and serves as the club's representative for one year. The proclamation of the king, the king's dance, and the king's dinner mark the festive conclusion.
The town of Werlte and its districts are rich in active traditional clubs. The Werlte Marksmen's Brotherhood (main town) holds its main festival with king's shooting in July, while districts like Wieste or Vrees have their own festival dates. The mutual visits and joint activities of the clubs create a dense network of solidarity and underscore the supra-local character of the Hümmling marksmen's culture.
In 2026, the Whitsun holidays in Wieste are entirely dedicated to the marksmen's festival. The marksmen's grounds become the center of the village community, and the festival tent becomes the venue for the marksmen's ball, the proclamation of the king, and the festive conclusion. The exact program schedule will be announced by the association in advance.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
