Traditional marksmen's festival of the Weserdeich Sports Shooting Club
The tradition of Schützenfeste is deeply rooted in the Wesermarsch region. Almost every village and district has its own shooting club, and the festivals take place from May to September across the entire district. The Schützenfest Weserdeich in Berne is a classic example of this tradition. The Sportschützenverein Weserdeich organizes the festival, which attracts not only members but also numerous guests from the surrounding area.
The highlight of every Schützenfest is the King's Shoot. Participating marksmen compete to win the coveted title of King or Queen. In addition, there are trophy shoots, youth shoots, and club competitions. The traditional festive parade winds through the village, often accompanied by a marching band or brass band. The festive award ceremony for the new monarch, complete with chain, medals, and honorary badge, takes place afterward in front of the shooting club house or festival tent.
In the evening, the festival tent transforms into a dance floor. Live music, cool beer, and hearty food create a lively atmosphere that lasts well into the night. The Schützenfest is a multi-generational celebration where club members, families, neighbors, and former residents of the community reunite — an important social glue for the village community.
The 2026 edition falls on the second weekend of August. The Sportschützenverein Weserdeich prepares the festival with a long lead time: preparation days, setting up the festival tent, and decorating the clubhouses are part of the preliminary program. On the day of the festival, the traditional program of shooting, parade, King's award ceremony, and evening dance unfolds.
The Schützenfest is the social highlight of the club's year. The new shooting monarch will wear the crown and chain for a year, representing the club on numerous occasions.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Sportschützenverein Weserdeich in good time. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Admission to most program points is free, a small fee may apply for the dance evening.
