Steide as a Salzbergen Rifle Association
The Steide Rifle Association is part of the network of seven Salzbergen rifle associations. Like each of these associations, Steide has its fixed festival date in the annual calendar, making a distinctive contribution to Salzbergen's festival culture. The festival on the third weekend of July falls between the Citizens' Rifle Festival (second weekend of July) and the Hubertus Festival (second weekend of August).
Three Days of Festivities in Steide
The 2026 festival spans three days, from Saturday, July 18th, to Monday, July 20th. Saturday offers the ceremonial start with assembly, a procession, and the Rifleman's Ball in the evening. Sunday is dedicated to the King's Shoot, the proclamation of the new king, and the King's Dance. Monday concludes the festival weekend with the King's Dinner and a festive closing. Catering is provided throughout in the festival tent, and local music bands ensure a festive atmosphere.
King's Shoot and Tradition
As with all Emsland rifle festivals, the King's Shoot is the central sporting and symbolic highlight. During the shoot at the wooden bird, riflemen compete for the title of King. Whoever shoots down the last splinter is proclaimed King and chooses his Queen. The new royal couple represents the association for one year at guest festivals and events.
Embedded in Salzbergen's Rifle Culture
With its seven rifle associations, Salzbergen is one of the strongholds of rifle traditions in southwestern Emsland. The mutual visits of the associations, joint activities, and the shared festival calendar create a vibrant festival life that intensely shapes the municipality from May to August. The Steide association maintains close contacts with the other Salzbergen associations and with friendly rifle associations in the wider Emsland region and neighboring Münsterland.
