Annual Schützenfest in Soderstorf, Samtgemeinde Amelinghausen — traditionally on the third weekend of June
The Soderstorf Marksmen's Association is the central pillar of marksmanship activities in the municipality of the same name. Like many marksmen's associations in the heath region, it cultivates sport shooting with small-bore rifles and air rifles, as well as social club life centered around the annual Schützenfest. With members from Soderstorf and the surrounding villages of the Amelinghausen municipality, the association is an important social anchor in this rural region.
The Schützenfest traditionally takes place on the third weekend of June. This fixed date in the annual calendar makes it a reliable focal point for club life. Members, relatives from all over Germany, and friendly associations plan their schedules around it. In 2025, the festival took place from June 20th to 22nd — in 2026, the same weekend slot is expected to be used (the 3rd weekend of June in 2026 falls on the weekend of June 19th–21st).
The festival follows the North German shooting tradition: assembly of club members in uniform in the morning, king's shooting at the shooting range, festive procession through Soderstorf, proclamation of the new marksmen's king and queen, king's dinner, and dance evening in the festival tent. Friendly associations from the Amelinghausen municipality — Amelinghausen, Betzendorf, Oldendorf (Luhe), Rehlingen — participate in the festive procession. A family programme with a carousel and children's entertainment, as well as a Sunday morning pint (Frühschoppen), open the festival to the entire village.
Soderstorf is located in the heart of the Lüneburg Heath within the Amelinghausen municipality. Its rural setting between the Lopau valley and heathland shapes the character of the village. With active clubs, a fire brigade, and a church community, Soderstorf maintains a vibrant village life — the Schützenfest is an expression of this strong community identity.
As in previous years, the festival Friday begins with a social opening evening and initial shooting competitions. Saturday's festivities focus on the king's shooting, the proclamation of the new monarchs, and the dance evening in the festival tent — the social highlight for members, families, and friendly associations. Festival Sunday features the festive procession through Soderstorf, the king's dinner, the morning pint (Frühschoppen) with brass music, and the family programme with children's entertainment in the afternoon.
The exact detailed programme for 2026 will be published by the Marksmen's Association in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points:
