Traditional Heathland Marksmen's Festival in the Hankensbüttel municipality
Founded in 1927, the Schützenverein Repke-Dedelstorf has shaped the social life of the two namesake districts for nearly a hundred years. What began as a shooting sports association has evolved over the decades into a cornerstone of village community life, extending far beyond the actual shooting sport. Youth work, a ladies' company, a fife and drum corps, and close ties with friendly clubs in the Hankensbüttel municipality are as much a part of its identity as the annual festival in June.
The marksmen's festival follows the classic Lower Saxony pattern, divided into several program blocks. It usually begins with a relaxed festive evening on Saturday afternoon or evening, concluding with a dance evening in the festively decorated clubhouse. Sunday morning focuses on the King's Shoot, followed by a festive parade through the streets of Repke and Dedelstorf, accompanied by the fife and drum corps and friendly clubs. The highlight is the proclamation of the new monarchs and the subsequent King's Banquet in the festival tent or clubhouse.
Dedelstorf is located about nine kilometers south of Hankensbüttel and belongs to the northern Gifhorn district. The municipality is surrounded by extensive heathlands, mixed forests, and small river valleys. The region, as part of the Südheide and the nearby Lüneburger Heide Nature Park, is a popular local recreation area. Visitors to the marksmen's festival can easily combine their stay with hikes, a trip to the Otter-Zentrum Hankensbüttel (Otter Centre), or a detour to the Isenhagener See lake.
In the sparsely populated heath villages, the marksmen's festival fulfills a central social function. It is a place for former villagers to reunite, an occasion for family celebrations, and a stage for honoring long-standing members. The close bond between generations and the commitment of the youth department ensure the continuation of the tradition.
The weekend of June 20/21, 2026, promises the traditional course of a North German marksmen's festival: assembly of the marksmen, King's Shoot, proclamation, festive parade through the villages, and convivial hours in the festival tent. The fife and drum corps will provide the musical accompaniment, while the ladies' and youth departments will contribute their own program items.
Regional bands are traditionally engaged for the Saturday dance evening. The atmosphere in the festival tent is known to be family-friendly, with short distances between the bar, dance floor, and seating area. Sunday's social highlight, with the King's Banquet and proclamation, takes center stage.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
