Marksmen's Traditions in the Oldenburger Münsterland
The Schützenfest Petersdorf is one of numerous Schützenfeste celebrated every year between May and September in the Cloppenburg district. The organizer is the St. Franziskus Schützenbruderschaft Petersdorf, a Catholic-influenced marksmen's club in the Petersdorf district of Bösel. The club follows the tradition of the historical brotherhoods of the Oldenburger Münsterland, which combine tradition, church affiliation, and village community life.
Course of the Schützenfest
The festival follows the classic course of a North German Schützenfest: King's and bird shooting to determine the new royal couple, festival service, festival parade through the village center with a marching band and club banners, as well as dance evenings in the festival tent with a live band and DJ. The focus is on the proclamation of the new dignitaries and the social gathering of the club members with their families.
Petersdorf and the Municipality of Bösel
Petersdorf is one of the four districts of the municipality of Bösel in the northern Cloppenburg district, a rural region with strong Catholic and marksmen traditions. The municipality of Bösel has several marksmen's clubs that hold their festivals throughout the summer months. The St. Franziskus Schützenbruderschaft Petersdorf will publish the final program for 2026 in spring. Based on experience, Schützenfeste start on Saturday evening with the king's reception and the first dance evening. Sunday features the festival service and parade, and Monday the family day and the final proclamation of the king.
