St. Hubertus Marksmen Niederzissen — Tradition and Customs

The St. Hubertus Marksmen Niederzissen are one of the most traditional brotherhoods in the Brohltal. Like many Rhenish marksmen's clubs, they venerate St. Hubertus of Liège, the patron saint of hunters and marksmen, whose feast day is traditionally celebrated on November 3rd. However, throughout the year, the Pentecost Sunday Schützenfest is the social highlight of the club's life.

Pentecost as a Festival Season

Pentecost is considered the central festival season in many parts of Rhenish marksmen's traditions. The Niederzissen brotherhood follows this tradition and celebrates its main festival on Pentecost Sunday, which ranges from the liturgical church service and festive procession to the social evening. The brotherhood members appear in their traditional uniforms with sashes, feathered hats, and club badges.

King's Shoot a Few Days Later

A special feature of the Niederzissen Schützenfest is the separation of the festival day and the King's Shoot. While the actual festival takes place on Pentecost Sunday, the King's Shoot follows a few days later on June 4, 2026. During the King's Shoot, the active marksmen elect a new Marksmen's King from among themselves, who will represent the brotherhood for the following year. This separation allows for the enjoyment of the festive character on Pentecost Sunday without the pressure of competition.

Niederzissen — Administrative Seat of the Brohltal Municipal Association

Niederzissen is the administrative seat of the Brohltal municipal association and the central town in this Eifel region at the transition to the Middle Rhine. The municipality, with around 2,500 inhabitants, is home to several active clubs, including the St. Hubertus Marksmen, the Herz Jesu parish, music clubs, and sports clubs. The Schützenfest is an important social event that strengthens the community and attracts visitors from the entire Brohltal.

Marksmen's Customs in Rhineland-Palatinate

Schützenfeste have a long tradition in Rhineland-Palatinate, especially in the predominantly Catholic regions of Brohltal, Eifel, and Westerwald. They are an expression of an active club culture that combines customs, social engagement, and festival culture.
