Traditional marksmen's festival of the Heimatschutzverein (Homeland Defence Association) from 1583 in the Hochstift Paderborn
With its founding year of 1583, the Heimatschutzverein Neuenbeken 1583 e.V. is among the oldest marksmen's associations in North Rhine-Westphalia. For over 440 years, it has organised the Schützenfest in the Paderborn district of Neuenbeken — one of the most traditional marksmen's festivals in the Hochstift Paderborn.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Saturday, June 27, to Monday, June 29. Before that, the bird shooting takes place — on Saturday, June 20, 2026, one week before the actual festival. The new marksmen's king (and, if applicable, the new youth marksmen's king) is determined.
The Schützenfest follows the classic East Westphalian-Paderborn sequence:
The Heimatschutzverein Neuenbeken sees itself not just as a marksmen's association, but as an association for the entire local community. The Schützenfest is its annual highlight; in addition, the association cultivates local customs, organises smaller festivals, and takes care of preserving local traditions.
In the Paderborn district, marksmen's associations are exceptionally numerous: practically every district has its own marksmen's society, and the festival calendar features a different Schützenfest weekend after weekend from May to September. The Neuenbeken festival holds a special position due to its age and deep roots — and is recognised by local media (Neue Westfälische, Paderborner Zeitung) as an important event in the Paderborn summer.
The district of Neuenbeken is located in the southeastern part of Paderborn, in North Rhine-Westphalia. With its hamlets, parish church, and village structure, Neuenbeken has retained much of its original character despite being incorporated into the city — a typical example of the rural districts that characterise the Paderborn region.
The 2026 edition follows the classic structure of a Paderborn Schützenfest. Detailed daily programmes with times will be published by the Heimatschutzverein before the festival.
Admission to public events is free. Marquee events may require tickets — details at hsv-neuenbeken.de.
