Four-day traditional festival under the oak trees on the first weekend of August
Luhdorf and Roydorf belong to the town of Winsen (Luhe) on the eastern edge of the Harburg district. The Schützenkameradschaft Luhdorf-Roydorf e.V. unites the shooting families of both districts and hosts its main festival annually on the first weekend of August. The Schützenfest is part of a long line of North German shooting traditions, combining customs, club life, and social encounters in a multi-day format.
The festival grounds 'Unter den Eichen' are located at the Luhdorf shooting club house, Luhdorfer Waldweg 14. The historic oak setting gives the festival a unique atmosphere and makes the shooting club house one of the most distinctive festival grounds in the region. The grounds, including the festival tent, shooting ranges, and outdoor areas, are laid out so that all programme points are easily accessible.
The festival traditionally spans from Friday evening to Monday. It begins with a solemn Zapfenstreich (a military ceremony) accompanied by a marching band, followed by the bird shooting competition to determine the new monarchs. The festive parade on Saturday afternoon leads shooters, music groups, and delegations from friendly clubs through the districts. The King's dinner, King's ball, and morning pint (Frühschoppen) round off the programme before the family day on Monday provides a festive conclusion.
Behind the festival lies a dense network of clubs, including the shooting association, marching bands, the fire brigade, and neighbouring clubs. Preparations begin months in advance with preliminary shooting events and practice runs. During the festival, volunteers ensure setup, dismantling, catering, and security. This sense of community makes the Schützenfest Luhdorf-Roydorf more than just a folk festival: it is a living piece of village culture that connects generations.
Among the numerous shooting festivals around Winsen (Luhe) and Marschacht, the Luhdorf-Roydorf festival holds a firm place. It attracts guests from the entire municipality, from neighbouring towns, and from Hamburg who want to experience an authentic North German shooting festival in August.
The 2026 festival continues the unbroken tradition, bringing together shooting families, marching bands, and guests at the 'Unter den Eichen' festival grounds. The characteristic oak grove around the shooting club house forms the natural backdrop for four days of customs and conviviality.
The exact hourly schedule, including the King's dinner, festival ball, and family afternoon, will be published by the organiser in the summer of 2026. The Zapfenstreich at the start of the festival, the bird shooting competition to determine the new monarchs, and the festive parade through the districts of Luhdorf and Roydorf remain as established.
The exact programme for 2026 will be published by the organiser in early summer. The structure follows the proven key points from previous years:
