Traditional Schützenfest of the Leer-Haltern Marksmen's Association, established in 1609
Founded in 1609, the Leer-Haltern Marksmen's Association is one of the oldest in Lower Saxony and Northern Germany. Its tradition dates back to a time when citizen marksmanship played an important role in defense, civic pride, and social life in the Hanseatic cities and their surrounding communities. The association has preserved this tradition over the centuries and is today the custodian of the most important district festival in Leer-Haltern.
The annual Schützenfest lasts for three days and follows the classic East Frisian structure: bird shooting, king shooting, king's dinner, a festive parade through the district, a dance evening with a band, and a family day with a morning pint and a reduced program for children. The large festival tent serves as the central stage where the marksmen's guilds, local associations, district residents, and guests come together.
For the Haltern district, the Schützenfest is far more than a summer festival: it is the defining event of the year, celebrating the royal title, association membership, and district history together. Generations spend the weekend together in the festival tent and on the fairgrounds.
The event is organized by the Leer-Haltern 1609 e.V. Marksmen's Association, which organizes the festival annually with volunteer commitment. Admission to the festival grounds is free; selected dance evenings may have an admission fee. Exact program schedules and times will be published on leer-haltern.de before the festival date.
The 2026 edition continues the classic Schützenfest format that the association has maintained for generations. Current program schedules and times will be communicated on leer-haltern.de before the event.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Marksmen's Association in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of East Frisian Schützenfeste:
