Traditional Schützenfest on the weekend after Corpus Christi in Arnsberg-Hüsten
In the Hüsten district of Arnsberg, the Schützenfest boasts a centuries-old tradition. It has been held for generations on the weekend after Corpus Christi – a date that the Hüsten marksmen prepare for with joy weeks in advance. The festival belongs to the Arnsberg District Marksmen's Association, which preserves the marksmen tradition across seven districts in the Hochsauerland region.
The King's Shoot is the emotional heart of the festival. Candidates step up to the target, taking shot after shot until the last splinter falls. Whoever shoots down the target becomes the Marksmen King and, with his Queen, leads the entire following marksmen's year. The coronation takes place in the festival tent during the King's Proclamation.
On Sunday, the grand parade forms, in which all Hüsten marksmen, the marching band, friendly brotherhoods, and the marksmen's band participate. The procession winds through the main streets of Hüsten and ends in front of the Schützenhalle. Residents decorate their houses with birch branches and marksmen's flags.
The Schützenhalle Hüsten serves as the festival centre for the King's reception, coronation ball, festive evenings, and closing ceremony. In the festival tent in front of the hall, the social life of the district comes together – clubs, families, and friends celebrate here together.
Hüsten is one of Arnsberg's most populous districts in the Hochsauerland district. Characterised by industry, medium-sized businesses, and an active citizenry, Hüsten is also a starting point for hikes in the Arnsberg Forest. The Schützenfest is part of a dense annual event calendar in Hüsten, featuring Kirmes (funfair), a street market, and local festivals.
The Arnsberg District Marksmen's Association coordinates a variety of Schützenfeste in its seven districts. The Hüsten festival is one of the most prominent and draws marksmen from all over the Sauerland region to Arnsberg. Anyone who wants to experience the East Westphalian-Sauerland marksmen's customs live is in the right place here.
Over the three festival days, the entire social life of Hüsten comes together. Saturday begins with assembly, the King's Shoot, and the King's Proclamation. Sunday follows with the grand parade through Hüsten, followed by the coronation ball. Monday brings the closing festival with a final ball.
The exact program details will be published by the District Marksmen's Association and the St. Petri Schützenbruderschaft on their channels.
