Traditional Schützenfest of the Hittbergen Shooting Club and surrounding area on the last weekend of June
The Schützenverein Hittbergen und Umgebung e.V. is the central body for shooting sports in the communities of Hittbergen, Sassendorf, and Hohnstorf an der Elbe. This structure of a club operating across multiple locations is typical for the smaller communities in the Elbtalaue region — organizing together cost-effectively and with a strong membership base, which would be difficult to achieve alone. Sport shooting with small-caliber rifles and air rifles, as well as club life centered around the annual Schützenfest, form the core of the club's activities.
Traditionally, the Schützenfest takes place on the last weekend of June. This fixed date makes it a reliable anchor in the summer calendar of the Elbmarsch region. Members, former members, relatives from all over Germany, and friendly clubs plan around it. Friendly shooting clubs from neighboring towns — especially from the Scharnebeck collective municipality and the Lauenburg region — also participate in the festive parade.
As is customary in North German shooting traditions, the king's shooting competition forms the sporting core. At the club's shooting range, the marksmen determine their new majesties — the King, the Queen, and the Youth King. The proclamation takes place on the evening of the festival in the marquee — the emotional highlight for the winners and their families. The festive parade winds through the streets of Hittbergen, making the event visible to the entire village community.
Hittbergen is located in the Scharnebeck collective municipality near the Elbe river and opposite Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein. Its rural setting in the Lower Saxony Elbtalaue Biosphere Reserve shapes the village — club life, the fire department, and the shooting club are the central social anchors. The Schützenfest is an expression of this village tradition.
As in previous years, the festival Saturday begins with the assembly of club members in shooting attire. This is followed by the king's shooting competition and other contests. In the evening, the new majesties are proclaimed, and the dance evening in the festival tent marks the start of the social part. Sunday focuses on the festive parade through Hittbergen — friendly shooting clubs from the Scharnebeck collective municipality also participate — as well as the morning pint (Frühschoppen), the king's dinner, and the family program in the afternoon.
The exact detailed program for 2026 will be published by the shooting club approximately four weeks before the festival. The structure follows the proven highlights of previous years:
