Peasant Community Marksmen's Festival in the Artland

The Schützenfest Hengelage-Brokstreek is the annual traditional festival of the eponymous peasant community (Bauernschaft) of Quakenbrück in the Artland region. The marksmen's club (Schützenverein) has been preserving this tradition for generations and is one of the central pillars of village community life.

Three Days in Mid-June 2026

The 2026 edition runs from Saturday, June 13, to Monday, June 15, at the Schützenplatz Hengelage-Brokstreek. This places the festival within the dense schedule of Schützenfeste in the Artland — a region where almost every weekend in early summer is marked by a marksmen's festival.

Classic Schützenfest Programme

As is customary for peasant community marksmen's festivals in the Artland, the event includes a clear traditional programme: bird-shooting contest (Vogelschießen), election of the new king and queen, proclamation of the new royal couple, parade through the Bauernschaft, royal dinner (Königsessen), dance evening with a live band, and a morning pint (Frühschoppen). The festival catering provides beer, bratwurst, and hearty classics.

Artland — A Region with Rich Marksmen Traditions

The Artland is a historically developed cultural landscape in the northern Osnabrücker Land. The region is rich in peasant communities (Bauernschaften), farms, and marksmen's traditions. With the Schützenfeste in Veer-Burskupper, Herbergen, Suttrup, Hengelage-Brokstreek, and Bersenbrück (SV of 1850), the Artland offers a dense network of traditional events in May, June, and July.

Quakenbrück as the Centre

Quakenbrück is the historical centre of the Artland and the administrative seat of the Samtgemeinde (collective municipality). The Hengelage-Brokstreek Bauernschaft is postal-wise part of Quakenbrück but maintains its own identity and community life. The Schützenfest is an important date in the annual calendar of the Quakenbrück area.
