The world's largest Schützenfest – ten days, one million visitors, 497th edition on the Schützenplatz
Hannover claims the title of the world's largest Schützenfest – and with good reason. With over a thousand showmen, around a thousand market stalls, several large beer tents, and an average visitor count of about one million people over ten days, the festival is among Germany's largest folk festivals (Volksfeste). In international comparison, it is in a league with Munich's Oktoberfest and Cannstatt's Wasen. The 2026 edition is the 497th in an unbroken tradition since the early 16th century.
The tapping of the first beer keg on Friday afternoon, July 3rd, 2026, opens the festival. The Lord Mayor or another dignitary taps the first keg with symbolic blows, after which visitors flock to the beer tents. From this moment on, the festival operations run continuously until July 12th.
The most important traditional moment of the festival is the Schützenausmarsch (marksmen's parade) on Sunday, July 5th. Around ten thousand marksmen, brass bands, historical fife and drum corps, and costume groups from Germany and abroad march over a ten-kilometer route through the city center. The parade is North Germany's largest procession of its kind and is broadcast live by the Niedersächsischer Rundfunk.
On Wednesday, July 8th, the traditional Family Day takes place. All rides and many food stalls offer reduced prices. The program is tailored for families with children. Additionally, there is a spectacular fireworks evening and a Day of Associations.
The festival features 17 rides, 4 walkthrough attractions, and 15 large catering establishments. The beer tents each have a different profile: Brauhaus Live with live music and festival tent atmosphere, the Gaypeople-Zelt as one of the few explicitly queer festival tents at a major German folk festival, the Alt-H-Zelt with the regional beer specialty Lüttje Lage, and the Irish-Pub-Biergarten. In addition, the row of carousels offers classic folk festival attractions.
As in previous years, the festival is structured around the main events: keg tapping, Schützenausmarsch, and Family Day. Brauhaus Live, Gaypeople-Zelt, Alt-H-Zelt, and Irish-Pub-Biergarten are the main meeting points for beer tent visitors with diverse preferences.
The Schützenfest Hannover estimates around one million visitors per edition. Exact numbers vary depending on the weather, but visitor numbers generally remain in this range. Wednesday is traditionally less crowded and thus ideal for families.
17 rides (roller coaster, Ferris wheel, carousels, swing boats) and 4 walkthrough attractions. The selection changes from year to year.
