Traditional marksmen's festival of the Großenkneten and surrounding area marksmen's club at Wilhelm-Wellmann-Platz
Großenkneten is a municipality with a strong tradition of marksmanship, anchored in several clubs. The Schützenverein Großenkneten u. Umgebung e.V. is one of the largest and organizes a marksmen's festival every year, which forms the firm centerpiece of its club year. Pentecost and early June are traditionally classic dates for marksmen's festivals in the region; in 2026, the festival will also be celebrated during this period.
The venue is the Wilhelm-Wellmann-Platz in the center of Großenkneten. The festival tent is erected here, the shooting competitions take place here, the king's proclamation is made here, and the marksmen's family celebrates their festival balls here. The central location of the square facilitates the connection of the festival to business people, clubs, and the citizenry.
A special feature of the 2026 edition is the introduction of a citizens' king shooting. With this, the club is opening the traditional king's shooting to all interested citizens of the municipality – including non-members. The citizens' king shooting aims to strengthen the club's ties to the village community and inspire new target groups for the marksmen's tradition.
Like all North German marksmen's festivals, the Großenkneten festival also combines historical customs with lively sociability. The battalion roll call, club flags, drummers, festival parade, and king's dinner give the festival its characteristic structure. The official program points are complemented by dance evenings, family activities, and gastronomic stands.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years: Opening with drummers and battalion roll call, followed by the festival parade, king's shooting (as well as the newly introduced citizens' king shooting), proclamation, festival ball, family day, and morning pint.
With the citizens' king shooting, the club is setting an important accent in 2026 that strengthens participation beyond the immediate marksmen's family.
Specific dates and times will be announced on schuetzenverein-grossenkneten.de.
The exact dates for 2026 will be announced in good time by the Schützenverein Großenkneten u. Umgebung e.V. on schuetzenverein-grossenkneten.de and in the local event calendar. The traditional date is the Pentecost weekend or an early June weekend.
