373rd edition of the Schützengilde Groß Oesingen's marksmen's festival
With its 373rd edition, the Groß Oesingen Schützenfest is one of the oldest marksmen's festivals in Lower Saxony. The roots of the Schützengilde reach deep into the early modern period – over the centuries, the festival has changed, but its central importance for the village community has remained constant. It is more than just a club festival: it is a commitment to tradition, community, and customs.
What makes the Groß Oesingen festival special is the high level of participation: up to 500 marksmen and women from the Schützengilde and friendly clubs are expected for the festival parade. With marching bands, flags, historical uniforms, and the reigning and soon-to-be-proclaimed monarch, the parade offers a spectacular sight that has a special impact in a village with just over 1,100 inhabitants.
The shooting for the king's title is the sporting and symbolic center of the festival. The new monarch is proclaimed in a festive ceremony; the handover of the king's chain with the medals of past kings takes place in the festival tent. With 373 editions, the king's chain is a unique club archive.
A special feature is the children's shooting on Sunday afternoon. The youngest members of the Schützengilde can compete for the title of children's king in an age-appropriate format. This passes on the tradition to the next generation – an important signal in times when many traditional clubs are complaining about a lack of young members.
Groß Oesingen is located in the Samtgemeinde Hankensbüttel in the northern district of Gifhorn. The region is characterized by agriculture and rural traditions. The Schützenfest is part of a rich festival calendar, which includes, among others, the Hankensbüttel Schützenfest (365th edition) and the children's shooting festival there.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Schützengilde in the spring. The structure of the festival follows centuries of tradition and gives each element its place.
