Largest Schützenfest in the Nordkreis Cloppenburg

The Friesoythe Schützenfest is by far the largest Schützenfest in the Nordkreis Cloppenburg. It outshines the numerous local Schützenfeste of the Friesoythe rural districts (Ahrensdorf, Gehlenberg, Markhausen, Thüle, Altenoythe, Neuscharrel, Kampe/Ikenbrügge, Edewechterdamm, Neuvrees) and brings together marksmen from the entire administrative district for the main event. The organizer is the Schützenkreis alter Amtsbezirk Friesoythe (SKAAF), which continues the tradition of the historical administrative district of Friesoythe as a church-administrative unit.

First Weekend of August — Traditional Date

Like many major Schützenfeste, the Friesoythe Schützenfest has its fixed date: the first weekend of August. In 2026, this falls on August 1st to 3rd. This continuity of dates is an essential element of shooting tradition — for generations, families know that the first weekend of August belongs to the Schützenfest.

Parade, King's Shooting, Festival Ball

The program follows the proven three-day structure of a major Schützenfest:

• Friday: Festival opening, assembly of the shooting clubs, festival ball with a dance band
• Saturday: King's shooting, extensive marksmen's events, family program, grand festival ball in the evening
• Sunday: Festival service, grand parade with all friendly shooting clubs of the SKAAF, proclamation of the new king's throne, morning pint, festival conclusion

The parade on Sunday is the highlight: with hundreds of marksmen in uniform, flag escorts, marching bands, and music groups.

Friesoythe as a Schützenfest Center

Friesoythe is not by chance the seat of the largest Schützenfest in the Nordkreis: The town is the regional center, seat of the historical Friesoythe office, and easily accessible for the shooting clubs from the surrounding rural districts. The Schützenfest is also a Volksfest (people's festival) — showmen, catering stands, and dance evenings ensure that non-marksmen also participate in the festival.
