Traditional marksmen's festival of the Drochtersen Marksmen's Association of 1866 in the Kehdinger Marsch
The Drochtersen Marksmen's Association was founded in 1866 – a time when shooting associations were transforming from their former military roots into heritage clubs. Over 160 years of club history make it one of the most traditional in Northern Germany. The annual Schützenfest is an indispensable event in the festival calendar of the Drochtersen municipality.
The Schützenfest spans from Friday to Sunday. The opening is marked by the opening ceremony with assembly at the clubhouse and a joint march to the festival grounds. Saturday brings the classic highlight with the king's shooting, parade, and king's proclamation. Sunday concludes with a morning pint, family day, and collecting the king from the new royal couple's home.
Saturday afternoon is dedicated to the grand parade. Accompanied by a marching band, club flags, and delegations from friendly associations and the reigning monarchs, the Drochtersen marksmen march through the village, past decorated houses and squares. The king's proclamation in the evening is the social highlight: the King, Junior King, Queen, and Children's Queen receive their sashes and crowns.
Drochtersen is the main village of the Drochtersen municipality in the Kehdinger Marsch – a flat marshland landscape along the Lower Elbe between Stade and Cuxhaven. The rural atmosphere, the dike landscape, and its location between the Elbe and Geest give the village and its Schützenfest a special character.
The club grounds in Drochtersen are set up as a festival site – with a festival tent, shooting ranges, carousels, beer garden, and food stalls. Residents decorate their houses with birch branches and club flags.
The king's shooting, parade, and king's proclamation on Saturday form the classic highlight. Marching bands and friendly associations accompany the parade.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Drochtersen Marksmen's Association in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
