Dersum in the Samtgemeinde Dörpen

Dersum is a municipality in the Samtgemeinde Dörpen in the Emsland district. The Samtgemeinde is located in the northern Emsland between Papenburg and Meppen and is characterized by a distinct village identity, an active club culture, and a close connection to the Ems river. In this region, the shooting club tradition has had a firm place for generations, and each village maintains its own shooting club with an annual main festival.

Two Festival Days in Dersum

The festival in 2026 spans two days, from Thursday, May 14th to Friday, May 15th. Thursday marks the festive opening with the assembly of the marksmen and the first evening party in the tent. Friday is dedicated to the King's Shoot, the proclamation of the King, the King's Dinner, and the King's Dance. Catering is provided in the festival tent, and local bands provide the festive accompaniment.

King's Shoot and Tradition

The King's Shoot is also the central sporting and symbolic highlight of the Schützenfest in Dersum. During the shoot at the wooden bird, the marksmen compete for the royal title. Whoever shoots down the last splinter is proclaimed King and chooses his Queen. The new royal couple represents the club for one year at guest festivals of friendly clubs in the Samtgemeinde and beyond.

Festival Calendar of the Samtgemeinde Dörpen

The Samtgemeinde Dörpen is home to numerous active shooting clubs that celebrate their festivals spread throughout the season: Neudersum (early May), Dersum (mid-May), Neurhede (July 10th), Heede (July 17th–18th), and others. The mutual visits and joint activities create a dense network of relationships and underscore the supra-local character of Emsland's shooting club traditions.
