Shooting Tradition in Northern Hagen
Boelerheide is a district in the north of Hagen, a large city at the transition between the Ruhr area and the Sauerland. The Schützenverein Boelerheide e.V. is one of the traditional clubs in the district and hosts its Schützenfest annually on the Hameckepark festival grounds. Three days of programming — all with free admission.
When: May 22 to 24, 2026
The Schützenfest runs from Friday, May 22, to Sunday, May 24, 2026. Three festival days on which the classic components of Westphalian shooting traditions are presented — embedded in the club and district culture of Boelerheide.
Where: Hameckepark Festival Grounds
The Hameckepark festival grounds are located at Fritz-Reuter-Straße 4 in 58099 Hagen. Hameckepark is a small green lung in the district and offers enough space for the festival tent, the shooting range, and the stage. Accessible by car via the A1/A45, and by the HCS network's city train and bus lines.
What to Expect
Three days of festival program with the classic elements of a Hagen Schützenfest:
- Exciting shooting competitions — the King's shooting as the highlight
- Festival parade and king's procession of the Boelerheide marksmen
- Frühschoppen on Sunday with live music
- Hearty food from the festival tent kitchen — Bratwurst, Schnitzel, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes)
- Live music and DJ in the festival tent — party atmosphere from morning till late
Free Admission — Club Culture as a Gift
While commercial events in Hagen often come with tickets, wristbands, and VIP areas, the Schützenverein Boelerheide adheres to tradition: free admission on all three festival days. The festival is financed by food and beverage sales in the festival tent, as well as by club memberships and sponsors from the district. The message: the festival grounds are open to everyone who wants to celebrate.
The Schützenverein Boelerheide e.V.
The club is more than just its Schützenfest. Throughout the year, other club events shape the Boelerheide calendar: the Herbstfrühschoppen on September 20, 2026, in the Schützenkeller (for members) and the traditional Gänseessen on November 17, 2026 — a fixed element of Hagen's cultural life. Thus, the Schützenverein is not only a preserver of customs but also a social hub for Boelerheide.
Shooting Traditions in the Ruhr Area
While shooting traditions are particularly dense in the Münsterland and Sauerland regions, they are also an important part of district identities in the southern Ruhr area. Hagen lies at the transition between the industrial Ruhr area and the rural Sauerland — and shares with both regions the heritage of bourgeois shooting fraternities, documented since the late Middle Ages. Today, the clubs primarily serve as meeting points for generations, connecting tradition and the present.
Discover Boelerheide
Those arriving for the Schützenfest should also explore Boelerheide: Hameckepark itself invites you for a walk, and the nearby Wupperberge and the Hagen Volme region offer opportunities for short hikes. You can reach Hagen city center with its main train station and the Karl-Ernst-Osthaus Museum in 15 minutes — so a visit to the Schützenfest can easily be combined with a day trip to Hagen.
