Four days of festivities by the Altkloster Shooting Club of 1883
The Altkloster Shooting Club was founded in 1883 and looks back on over 140 years of club history. Like many North German shooting clubs, the association emerged from the civic club movement of the late 19th century. Today, the club is not only active in sports but also a central pillar of village community life in the Altkloster district.
Buxtehude is located in the Altes Land, Northern Europe's largest contiguous fruit-growing region, southwest of Hamburg. The Hanseatic city with its medieval history consists of several districts, of which Altkloster is one. The district retains its distinct village character with active club life.
The Schützenfest spans four days, from Friday to Monday, thus forming the extensive format of a classic North German shooting festival. Each day traditionally has its own character – from the opening on Friday, the king's shooting and parade on the weekend, to the relaxed conclusion on Monday.
The highlight of the Schützenfest is the king's shooting, where the new monarch for the coming club year is determined. The proclamation of the king, with the handover of the king's chain and the king's eagle, is the emotional peak of the festival. The new monarchs are celebrated with their court and participate in the parade.
The traditional parade winds through the streets of Altkloster, accompanied by fife and drum corps, music bands, and friendly shooting clubs from the Altes Land and the district of Stade. Residents decorate houses and streets, and the festival community marches in historical uniforms.
The festival marquee serves as the convivial centre of the Schützenfest. Dance evenings with live bands and DJs, the traditional Sunday morning 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint), and a dedicated Family Day with children's activities, a children's king's shooting, and a fairground with rides and food stalls complete the programme.
The Schützenfest spans four days, from Friday to Monday. The Altkloster Shooting Club of 1883 organises the festival with the support of friendly clubs and the Buxtehude population.
The exact time slots for the king's shooting, parade, dance evenings, and family day will be published by the club in the summer of 2026.
