Traditional marksmen's festival on the Untermosel
Marksmen's festivals have deep roots in Rhineland tradition. The Schützenvereine originated in the Middle Ages as civil defense associations for the protection of villages and towns and have evolved over the centuries into cultural associations that significantly shape the social life of the Moselle and Eifel villages. The Schützenfest Alken stands in this tradition and is one of the most important club festivals in the Moselle village.
Over two days on the third weekend in July, the Schützenplatz is transformed into a festive venue with a marquee, beer tent, food stalls, and a stage. The program follows a traditional structure: Festival opening on Saturday afternoon with a marksmen's parade of members in uniform, followed by a grand festival evening with a live band in the marquee. On Sunday morning, the festival service takes place, and in the afternoon, the Vogelschießen – the traditional competition where marksmen demonstrate their shooting skills and determine the new Schützenkönig of the year.
The Vogelschießen is the dramatic highlight of the festival. The wooden "bird" is perched high on a pole, which the marksmen shoot at with an air rifle or a small-caliber rifle. Whoever takes the decisive shot that brings down the last piece of the bird from the pole is crowned the new Schützenkönig and represents the club for the coming year at official events.
The crowning takes place on Sunday afternoon in the marquee with a ceremonial act, the handover of the king's chain, and musical accompaniment. Afterwards, the festival continues with the new king and his court until the late evening. The Schützenfest thus combines custom, conviviality, and sporting tradition into a unique experience.
The 2026 Schützenfest in Alken will take place on Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th. The organizer is the Alken Schützenverein. The festival venue is the Schützenplatz with a shooting range and marquee.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the Alken Schützenverein in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
