Traditional Schützenfest of the Junggesellschaft Ahstedt in the Schellerten district of Ahstedt
Schützenfeste are among the oldest and most vibrant folk customs in Lower Saxony. In countless villages in the Hildesheim region, they are the social highlight of the year: a weekend when the whole village comes together, new shooting kings are proclaimed, festive parades march through the streets, and celebrations go on in the festival tent until late at night. The Schützenfest Ahstedt follows this tradition and is supported by the Junggesellschaft Ahstedt.
The Junggesellschaft Ahstedt is a traditional form of village self-organisation: an association of unmarried young men (in modern interpretation, now open to other groups in many villages) that organises the Schützenfest, cultivates customs, and shapes social life in the village. In Ahstedt, a district of the municipality of Schellerten in the Hildesheim district, the Junggesellschaft has a long tradition.
As with most Lower Saxony Schützenfeste, the programme includes: the bird shooting (Vogelschießen), at which the new shooting king is determined; the proclamation of the new royal couple; the grand festive parade through the village; the king's dinner; a family day or Sunday morning pint (Frühschoppen); and dance evenings in the festival tent with live music or a DJ. The exact programme is put together each year by the Junggesellschaft with local accents.
The municipality of Schellerten consists of several districts, including Ahstedt, and is located east of Hildesheim. The rural atmosphere and traditional structures shape club and festival life. Schützenfeste take place in various districts and are among the most important moments of identification for the village communities.
Even though the Schützenfest is primarily a festival for the village, guests from neighbouring communities and the wider area are warmly welcome. Anyone who experiences the festive parade on Sunday gets an authentic impression of the vibrant village culture of the Hildesheim district.
As in previous years, the festival is organised in close cooperation between the Junggesellschaft Ahstedt, the shooting club (Schützenverein), and other local clubs. The exact programme will be communicated in spring 2026 on-site and in the event calendar of the municipality of Schellerten.
The festival follows the established cornerstones of a Lower Saxony Schützenfest and combines sporting competition, tradition, and conviviality over three days.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the organiser in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
