Traditional festival of the St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft 1860 Adendorf with proclamation of the king and festival tent
The St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft 1860 e.V. is one of the oldest clubs in the municipality of Adendorf. Like many marksmen's clubs in Lower Saxony, it was founded in the mid-19th century, a time when the traditional citizen militias evolved into today's marksmen's brotherhoods and guilds. Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters and marksmen, gave the club its name. Today, the brotherhood cultivates traditional marksmen's customs, engages in sport shooting in various disciplines, and is deeply rooted in Adendorf's social life with its annual Schützenfest.
As is customary in the North German marksmen tradition, the core of the festival consists of the 'Vogelschießen', where the new monarchs—the Marksmen King, Ladies' Queen, and Youth King—are determined. The proclamation of the new kings traditionally takes place on the festival evening and is the emotional highlight for the club members. The event is accompanied by a festival parade through the streets of Adendorf, with participating friendly clubs, marching bands, and the local fire department. A large festival tent on the Schützenplatz, with dance evenings, live music, and catering, forms the setting for the event.
As is common at North German Schützenfeste, the program is not limited to club members. A Family Day, children's entertainment with carousels, bungee trampolines, or pony rides, a cake buffet, and the traditional 'Schützenfrühschoppen' on festival Sunday invite non-members and families from the region to participate. Festival Sunday, with the parade and 'Frühschoppen', is one of the most well-attended program points.
Adendorf is located north of Lüneburg in the municipality of Bardowick and, with around 10,000 inhabitants, is a significant residential community in the district. The active club life, including the marksmen's brotherhood, sports clubs, fire department, and cultural associations, shapes the social profile of the municipality. The Schützenfest is an open folk festival for all residents of Adendorf, extending beyond club boundaries.
The Adendorf Marksmen's Brotherhood traditionally focuses on a mix of formal marksmen's protocol and folk festival atmosphere. On the festival evening, the marksmen assemble in uniform with hats, feathers, and sashes for the official roll call and the festival parade. After the proclamation of the new monarchs, the festival tent opens for the social part — live band, dancing, and catering ensure a lively atmosphere until late at night.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the club in the weeks before the festival. The structure follows the proven highlights of the Schützenfeste in Adendorf:
