One of Lower Saxony's most traditional film festivals — socially engaged independent cinema
The Independent Film Festival Osnabrück was founded in 1986 and has developed over four decades into one of the most important platforms for socially engaged cinema in Lower Saxony. Unlike commercial film festivals, the festival consistently focuses on independent productions: films made outside the major studios, which address social issues and have little chance of distribution in German cinemas.
The festival's program line includes:
A central program rule: Only Osnabrück premieres are shown. The films are from the production years 2025 and 2026 and must not have had a German theatrical release yet. This policy guarantees the festival an exclusive character and makes it a platform for German premieres.
The festival uses several cinemas and venues in Osnabrück's city center. Art-house cinemas, the Cinema-Arthouse, the Lagerhalle, and community spaces form a decentralized festival area that shapes the city culturally in October.
The festival's mission is formulated from its founding principle: Cinema as a medium for social discourse. Films about flight, migration, ecological crises, social inequality, and political conflicts are at the center. The festival cooperates with non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and the city of peace, Osnabrück.
The festival is supported, among others, by nordmedia, the film funding agency for the states of Lower Saxony and Bremen. This funding ensures the continuity and professionalism of the annual editions.
The 41st edition continues the proven concept: independent cinema from around the world, shown for the first time in Germany, embedded in a dense program of film discussions and accompanying events.
The complete program will be published by Filmfest Osnabrück e.V. in late summer 2026 on filmfest-osnabrueck.de. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
