Chamber music in St. Nicolai Church — September 3 to 6, 2026
The Schubertiaden Schnackenburg is one of Germany's most unusual classical music festivals. Since 1993, internationally renowned musicians have gathered at the easternmost tip of the Elbe in Lower Saxony to play free of charge in the St. Nicolai Church. The 34th edition runs from Thursday, September 3, to Sunday, September 6, 2026.
With just 500 inhabitants, Schnackenburg is one of the smallest towns in Lower Saxony — and lies on the country's easternmost Elbe border, on the historic waterway between Hamburg and Magdeburg. The fact that a high-caliber classical music festival has been held here for over three decades is a declaration of love for the idea that music creates spaces and communities larger than geography might suggest.
The artistic director is Prof. Arkadi Zenzipér, who significantly shapes the festival. Musicians from his international network are invited — pianists, string players, wind players. The program is decided jointly on-site: a conscious departure from dusty, pre-formulated concert programs. Instead, programs emerge from the encounters and moods of the musicians during the festival week.
Four concert evenings are spread across the long weekend. The focus is traditionally on Franz Schubert — hence the name — supplemented by works from the Viennese Classical period, Romanticism, and occasionally Modernism. St. Nicolai Church offers intimate acoustics and an atmospheric backdrop.
A special feature: Free admission, donations welcome. The musicians perform without remuneration. Tickets are available 45 minutes before the concert at the box office — a deliberate renunciation of advance sales and commercial logic. Those who make it to Schnackenburg should be able to experience music.
The exact program for 2026 will be determined jointly by the musicians on-site — a special feature of the Schubertiaden Schnackenburg. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
St. Nicolai Church, 29493 Schnackenburg. Via the B 493 from Gartow. Dannenberg train station + car.
Free admission. Donations welcome. Tickets 45 minutes before the concert at the box office — no advance sales.
Schnackenburg on the Elbe is also a scenic highlight — combine a day with a walk along the waterway and a festival concert in the evening.
