Community breakfast in the open air in the districts of Schorfheide
The Schorfheide municipality in the Barnim district comprises nine districts, nestled within one of Brandenburg's most renowned large nature reserves — the Schorfheide-Chorin region with its dense forests and lakes. Lichterfelde, Werbellin, Groß Schönebeck, Finowfurt, and other villages form an extensive municipality where the individual districts are sometimes several kilometres apart. The Schorfheidefrühstück is an attempt to bring these dispersed districts together in a shared format.
Unlike traditional town or village festivals, the Schorfheidefrühstück is deliberately a picnic format: At a long table in the middle of one of the districts (a different one each year), participants bring their own breakfast — rolls, jam, cheese, coffee, tea, fruit. There is no admission fee, no commerce, no political advertising, and no rented stalls. This reduction is programmatic: it is about conversation, neighbourliness, and spending time together under the open sky.
Since 2011, the Schorfheidefrühstück has moved through the nine districts of the municipality. Previous locations: Lichterfelde (2025), Groß Schönebeck (2024), Finowfurt (2023). In 2026, it's Werbellin's turn — a small district on the west bank of the Werbellinsee, known to Berliners and Brandenburgers as a popular swimming spot. The event begins at 10 a.m. and typically runs until 2 p.m.
The Schorfheidefrühstück explicitly invites “all people who make Schorfheide colourful, regardless of skin colour and nationality” and expressly excludes xenophobic remarks. The format thus positions itself as a gesture of neighbourliness in times when the public climate does not make this a matter of course. Over 90 local organizations — sports clubs, cultural groups, schools, charities — have participated in past editions.
The Schorfheidefrühstück 2026 will take place in the Werbellin district of the Schorfheide municipality — the exact date (typically in September, based on the previous year's pattern) and location will be announced by the Schorfheide municipality. The organizers are the Schorfheide municipality in cooperation with the participating associations and residents. Format: Picnic at a long table in the open air. Participants bring their own breakfast (rolls, cheese, jam, coffee, tea, fruit); there is no on-site sales, no admission fee, and no advertising. The Schorfheidefrühstück is intended as a gesture of neighbourly encounter and expressly excludes xenophobic attitudes.
