Oktoberfest of the municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg in Bavarian style
The Schönenberger Oktoberfest is an example of how far the Munich Oktoberfest has set a precedent in Germany. Even in the West Palatinate, almost 400 kilometers from the Bavarian metropolis, people celebrate in Bavarian style in autumn: Maßkrugs of beer, Lederhosen and Dirndl, Oktoberfest classics on stage, and Bavarian specialties at the buffet. The municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg organizes its own Oktoberfest, creating an event that is as attractive to younger generations as it is to older ones.
While the original in Munich attracts over six million visitors to the Theresienwiese and lasts for more than two weeks, regional Oktoberfests in most German villages and small towns are more compact and personal. The Schönenberger Oktoberfest is designed as a one-day event or a weekend event (the exact format for 2026 will be announced by the organizer) and is aimed at the residents of the municipality and its surroundings in the Kusel district and the neighboring Saarpfalz district.
The catering follows the Bavarian model: pretzels from the wood-fired oven, roast chicken, pork knuckle with sauerkraut, Weißwurst (white sausage) with sweet mustard, Obatzda (cheese spread) with bread, braided sweet bread, and sweet specialties. Bavarian beers are served in Maßkrugs, supplemented by a smaller selection of Palatinate wines as a nod to regional tradition. Guests are encouraged to wear traditional costume — Lederhosen for men, Dirndl for women.
The musical program is entirely in the spirit of Oktoberfest tradition. Oktoberfest classics such as "Ein Prosit", "Anton aus Tirol", and "Cordula Grün", supplemented by Schlager, sing-along hits, and party music, make up the setlists of the invited bands or DJs. People dance on the beer benches, and the mood rises as the evening progresses.
With the Oktoberfest, the municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg implements a format that appeals to the younger generation as much as the older one. While the numerous village festivals (Kerwen) of the municipality are bound by tradition, the Oktoberfest is an event format that brings a modern, more convivial note to the festival calendar. Visitors are expected from the entire Kusel district and the neighboring Saarpfalz district.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the municipality in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of a Palatinate Oktoberfest:
Festival opening in the early evening with beer tapping. Opening of the festival tent operations. Welcome by the mayor or the local administrator.
Pretzels from the wood-fired oven, roast chicken, pork knuckle with sauerkraut, Weißwurst with sweet mustard, Obatzda with bread. Bavarian beers in Maßkrugs. Palatinate wine as a regional tribute.
Live music with Oktoberfest classics, Schlager, and party music. Dancing on the beer benches. Sing-along hits, polka, waltz, and party music. In larger events, possibly an Oktoberfest band with a large ensemble.
Festival end in the late evening or night hours depending on the format.
The exact date for 2026 will be announced by the municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg in advance on the municipal website.
