Traditional Kirchweih of the Schmittweiler district on the third Sunday in September
The current municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg consists of several former districts that were merged into a larger administrative unit during the Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform of 1969–1972. In addition to the main towns of Schönenberg and Kübelberg, the smaller districts of Schmittweiler and Sand are included. Each of these districts has preserved its own identity — and its own Kerwe.
Schmittweiler is a small rural village on the edge of the Westpfalz region, nestled in a gently rolling landscape. The traditional Kerwe on the third Sunday in September falls in a season when the summer warmth is still noticeable, but the days are already getting shorter and the transition to autumn is beginning. The festival mile is limited to the manageable village center, but what it lacks in size, the Schmittweiler Kerwe makes up for in conviviality and authenticity.
The Kerwe often begins on Sunday with a festive church service, followed by the morning pint, lunch with Palatinate specialties, and the afternoon program with coffee and cake. The evening often features a small dance event or a cozy evening in the community hall. The district's clubs — typically the fire department, sports club, and church community — take turns providing catering each year.
The Schmittweiler Kerwe is, in the truest sense of the word, a village festival: most visitors know each other personally, families meet year after year, and former residents return for the weekend. This personal character makes the Kerwe a special experience that has little in common with large commercial events.
With September 20th, the Schmittweiler Kerwe 2026 falls on the last full weekend of September. The district's clubs are preparing for a busy day. Families from the entire district, former residents returning for the Kerwe, and guests from the neighboring districts of Schönenberg, Kübelberg, and Sand, as well as from the surrounding municipalities of the Kusel district, are expected.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the local council in advance. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years for a typical Palatinate Kerwe:
Festive church service for the Kirchweih. Followed by a morning pint in the community center or in front of the church with breakfast beer and first snacks.
Lunch with Palatinate specialties: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork and herbs) with sauerkraut, Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumpling), or other classic dishes. Palatinate wine, beer, and Schorle (wine mixed with sparkling water). Catering by local clubs.
Coffee and cake hour with homemade cakes from the villagers. Family program. Meeting of generations, reunion with former residents.
Evening event with live music, DJ set, or a cozy get-together until late at night.
