Guided tours through one of the most beautiful castles in the Nahe Valley on several dates throughout the year
Schloss Dhaun near Kirn is one of the most impressive historical buildings in the Naheland Hunsrück region. Throughout the year, the castle opens its doors on several dates for guided tours that convey the history, architecture, and atmosphere of the complex. Several dates are scheduled for spring 2026: two tours will be offered as early as March, followed by a special evening tour and a regular afternoon tour in May.
Schloss Dhaun boasts a history of over 800 years and combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architectural elements. The tours offer in-depth insights into its eventful history as the seat of the Wild and Rhine Counts, as a Baroque residence, and as a vibrant castle academy today, featuring a hotel and conference center.
The first documented mentions date back to the early 12th century. The Wild and Rhine Counts built the castle on a spur overlooking the Hahnenbachtal valley, which was expanded into a Baroque residential palace in the 17th century. The War of the Palatinate Succession (1689) brought destruction, but many structural elements were preserved. Today, remnants of the ring wall, the keep, the castle chapel, and the Baroque staircase tower bear witness to its eventful history.
The castle tours are led by experienced guides who bring the history of the estate to life with numerous anecdotes. Topics include the Wild and Rhine Counts, Baroque court culture, castle restoration, the function of individual rooms, and its current use. The spring and May dates offer different focuses: the evening tour on May 13, 2026 (8 PM) benefits from the special atmosphere of the castle at dusk and moonlight, while the daytime tour on May 23 (1:30 PM) allows for a more extensive exploration of the grounds.
Today, Schloss Dhaun operates as a castle academy, hotel, and conference center. Seminars, concerts, weddings, and cultural events take place year-round. The support association and the academy are dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of the castle – the castle tours are one of the most important offerings for day visitors and tourists.
The municipality of Hochstetten-Dhaun belongs to the Kirner Land association and is located about four kilometers northeast of Kirn. The Dhaun district, with the castle, sits enthroned on the mountain spur, while Hochstetten lies in the valley. The region is ideal for hiking, for example, on the Soonwaldsteig trail or in the Hahnenbachtal valley with the Celtic settlement of Altburg.
The evening tour at Schloss Dhaun on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 8 PM is one of the special program highlights of the 2026 season. Accompanied by a castle guide, participants will discover the castle's history in the twilight. Further dates in spring 2026 include: March 21st and 27th, as well as May 23rd (1:30 PM).
The evening tour thrives on the special atmosphere of the historic building as darkness falls. The walls, staircase tower, and keep appear particularly impressive during this hour. Detailed meeting points, prices, and registration details will be announced on schlossdhaun.de and nahe-dran.de.
