Festive open-air service for Pentecost in the setting of the Weser Renaissance castle
Pentecost — the festival of the Holy Spirit, the Acts of the Apostles, and the founding of the Christian Church — is celebrated in many communities with special open-air services. For years, Hämelschenburg Castle has maintained the tradition of inviting local church communities to a festive service in the castle courtyard. The combination of liturgical celebration and the direct experience of one of Northern Germany's most beautiful Renaissance complexes makes the service a special event.
The courtyard of Hämelschenburg Castle is surrounded by impressive sandstone facades. The symmetrical Renaissance architecture, the open view to the sky, the natural light, and the warm acoustics of the courtyard walls lend the service a unique dignity. Rows of chairs are specially set up, an altar is improvised or formed by a mobile altar table. The brass choir positions itself on one side, its full sound filling the space.
The service follows the classic Pentecost liturgy with introductory music, greeting, biblical readings, sermon, confession of faith, intercessions, Lord's Prayer, and blessing. Pentecost hymns such as 'Komm, Heiliger Geist' (Come, Holy Spirit) or 'Der Geist des Herrn' (The Spirit of the Lord) are sung together with the brass choir. The sermon takes up the biblical account of the Pentecost miracle and applies its message to the present day.
The service is ecumenical and open to all visitors — members of local church communities, tourists, spa guests from Bad Pyrmont, those religiously interested, families with children. No special liturgical preparation or denominational affiliation is required. Those who prefer to experience the service from a respectful observer's position are also welcome.
Following the service, there will be an opportunity for fellowship, conversations with the pastors, and to visit the castle grounds. The castle gardens invite a stroll, and individual castle rooms are accessible at the daily rate. Those who wish to spend a whole Pentecost day in Hämelschenburg will find a variety of impressions.
The exact times and liturgical participants will be published by the castle and local church communities in spring 2026.
